Thoracoscopic Pyothorax Lavage

A 1-year old intact male Rottweiler, presented to Emergency for a 6-hour history of lethargy and inappetence.  On admission, patient was febrile (T: 105.4) but had no cardiopulmonary abnormalities detected on auscultation, and was painful on palpation of his cranial abdomen and ventral thorax. CT of the chest further revealed plural effusion.  Microbiology reported Beta Streptococcus was cultured from the thoracocentesis of this fluid.  It was determined a thoracoscopic explore was indicated.

    Pyothorax are definitely an indication for Thoracoscopy at least as a decision making tool. Done four so far with only one to convert because too chronic. All cases are doing well.
    Thoracoscopy is recommended in human surgery for Pyothorax.
